St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church is located on the corner of Front Street and Welles Street in the Hanover section of Nanticoke. The outside edifice is quaint but presents an impressive view from many vantage points in the surrounding area. Whether driving into town from the North or standing at the end of Market Street in the town looking out from the south/west over the Hanover section, where the lovely blue cupolas shine above the treetops, St. John's provides a warm and inviting welcome to all to "Come and See" (John 4:29)

This is actual satellite imagery of St. John's, courtesy of our agent on the inside! Just think about the implications of seeing ourselves in this light. We are not just a little Church in a small village attached to a small coal town, tucked away in the hills of Northeast PA, we are a part of the world with the ability to influence it in both small and large ways by our prayer and good works, which are a product of our faith in the Risen Christ.

The image to the left, while not quite a shot from above in the traditional sense, is a realtime image of this beautiful world, created by God, entirely for man, His greatest creation. When we read the story of creation in the book of Genesis, it is important to note that God created man last. The Holy Fathers tell us that this is because everything He did and everything He created from nothing, the entire cosmos, was for man.

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."
