Memory Eternal John and Theresa Klos! - 03/07/10
On Sunday, 3/7, we lovingly and gratefully beseeched the Lord's blessing and sanctification of the 4 new enameled lampadas and new kadillo/censor given in memory of Theresa and John Klos by their daughters and others. These lampadas will adorn our iconostas and compliment the beauty of the holy images before which they will hang. All of these items are handworked from Greece and are beautiful to behold, a fitting tribute to 2 extrordinary people who have reposed in the Lord. May John and Theresa's memory be eternal!

Delivery of canned goods to St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, Wilkes Barre - 03/02/10
On Tuesday, March 3rd, Fr. Adam and some of the Church School children delivered the second load of number ten industrial sized cans of donated food, and a few other food items to the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen in Downtown Wilkes Barre. Hal, the manager of the Soup Kitchen, was glad to meet us and very appreciative of the fact that we were bringing in that size can, as it is the very thing they need and they go through so much of it. They feed homeless and poor men and women 7 days a week, sometimes 2 meals a day. We look forward to returning to donate more goods soon and often. To date, St. John's has collected and delivered more than 50 number ten cans and other items for the Soup Kitchen.

Kondak - Tone 8 - 02/21/10
No one could describe the Word of the Father; but when He took flesh from you, O Theotokos, He accepted to be described, and restored the fallen image to its former beauty. We confess and proclaim our salvation in word and images.

We bless the repairs in our boiler room - 02/14/10
On Sunday, 2/14, after Forgiveness Vespers, we blessed the newly repaired masonry in our boiler room. For years, after the initial water leak was repaired, the damage to the plaster and mortar and field stone foundation was deteriorating and crumbling. What a MESS! Through the hard labours of parishioners James Gadomski and Stephen Brezna the repairs were made and now the boiler room is clean and sanitary and beautiful!

IOCC emergency Health Kits and Emergency Cleanup Buckets delivered to Harrisburg Warehouse - 02/16/10
On Tuesday, February 16th, 2010, relief supplies from many Wilkes Barre Deanery parishes were delivered to the Church World Services partner warehouse at the Colonial Park United Church of Christ in Harrisburg*. Father Adam and St. John's parishioner, Byron Mosser, totally filled the back of a large pickup truck bed and made the trek to deliver these items. In all there were 20 buckets and many hundreds of emergency health kits to give some small measure of aid to our suffering brothers and sisters in the poorest and now most devastated nation in the western hemisphere. May God protect and have mercy on them and on us!

Holy Hierarch John the Golden Tongue, Pray to God for us! - 02/09/10
On Tuesday, Feb 09, 2010, several members of St. John's parish travelled all the way to the Cathedral of the Theotokos of the Sign in New York City to venerate the holy myrrh-streaming relics of Saint John Chrysostom. With the blessing of His Holiness, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the head of Saint John Chrysostom, which is enshrined in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior, has been made available for the faithful to venerate from February 6-12. The Nanticoke faithful arrived midday on Tuesday and were greeted with the sweet and heavenly scent of holy myrrh and with grateful hearts approached the Holy one with fear and trembling. The Cathedral also houses many other holy relics, includung the riasa of St. John of Kronstadt, and the relics of Ss. Barbara and Elizabeth the New Martyr. Truly a day well spent. The head of Saint John Chrysostom was brought to Russia from the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos in the 17th century. It was enshrined in the Moscow Kremlin's Assumption Cathedral until 1922. From 1930 until 1988, the reliquary with the shrine belonged to the Foundation for Guarding of Russian Silver of the 19th century. Several reliquaries, including the one bearing the saint's head, were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in the State Armoury Chamber on the eve of celebration of the 1000-year anniversary of the Baptism of Rus' on May 26, 1988.

Annual Nativity Open House
At St. John's Rectory
On New Year's Day, the Feast of St. Basil, the Feast of Our Lord's Circumcision in the flesh, we held our annual Rectory Open House. What a terrific time we had. Plenty of food, great fellowship, and excellent memories were shared making this celebration absolutely unforgettable. Perhaps the nicest and most intimate part was the spontaneous caroling taken up by the Older Kids; from their hearts, a gift to all of us. Or maybe it was the breaking of the Vasilopita, the St. Basil's Bread. A precious and popular Greek tradition and not usually to be found among the parishes of Slavic origins, this Vasilopita was given as a gift to St. John's by Abbess Olympiada of the Holy Protection Greek Orthodox women's monastery in White Haven, PA. Parish Choir Director and Council President Joe Paprota was the lucky winner who discovered the coin in his slice of Vasilopita. Many Years, Reader Joseph!

Twenty of St. John's Parishioners Come to Venerate the Myrrh-streaming Icon of the Theotokos - 10/01/09
On Thursday, Oct 1st, 20 of St. John's members made their way to our beloved Monastery of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk in South Canaan to venerate the holy wonder-working image of the Theotokos, "Softener of Evil Hearts". This icon "weeps" or streams holy miraculous beautifully fragrant myrrh without explaination and has been known to heal those who ask Her holy intercession on their behalf. What a joy to be able to be present for this memorable visit.
